Two years after withdrawing from these championships due to injury, Noah Lyles of the United States won his first IAAF World Championships title in the 200 meters.

Though the 22-year-old has, at times, appeared entirely dominant in his chosen event, he did not assert himself over the field until the final 30 meters of the race. The silver-haired Lyles crossed the line in 19.83, just a few steps ahead of Canada's Andre De Grasse, who capped his comeback story with a silver medal in 19.95 to go with his 100m bronze from last weekend.

Alex Quinonez of Ecuador took home the bronze in 19.98, as quick-starter Adam Gemili of Great Britain, who ran brilliantly through the rounds, took his feet off the gas in the final meters and had to settle for fourth.

Lyles has lost an outdoor 200m race only once in the past three years, an early-season competition against 400m favorite Michael Norman. In 2017, he withdraw from worlds due to injury but returned at the end of the season to claim the IAAF Diamond League crown. As a high schooler in 2016, he placed fourth at the Olympic Trials in the event. Now, he's a world champion.

Editor's Note: You might be wondering what a "spirit bomb" is. The term is from the popular anime show "Dragon Ball Z," of which Lyles is a noted fan, and refers to a powerful, ancient fighting technique used by Goku, one of the main protagonists of the show. Lyles often references "Dragon Ball Z" and spirit bombs on social media and it is also the inspiration for his striking silver hair color in Doha.
