PITTSBURGH - (May 4, 2013) - Under near ideal weather conditions on Saturday morning, the UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K kicked off the 5th DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon race weekend with high energy and thousands of participants as well as family and friends. "What a wonderful beginning of our race weekend to showcase Pittsburgh with perfect weather, runners of all ages, smiling faces and enthusiastic crowds," said Patrice Matamoros, race director of the DICK'S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon. In the 5K, Zach Miller, 29, of Brookhaven, PA won the men's race in 15 minutes, 53 seconds, just short of the event record of 15:39. Men's runner-up was William Snoberger of Ridgeley, WV clocking 16:11. "I felt good from the gun. Loving the energy near the Andy Warhol Bridge with the crowd cheering - made you feel good and it was so inspirational," said Miller post-race. For the women at the 3rd edition of the 5K, Larissa Park, 33, of Somerville, MA shattered the event record with her 17:18; the previous mark was 20:12 by Allison Hainer last year. Mary Dell of Boiling Springs, PA was the women's runner-up (17:29), also under the previous record. For Park, the win was special because the Pittsburgh / Mt. Lebanon native came down with a group of 16 representing the Somerville Road Runners, a running club from just outside Boston, and she added, "I was hoping to break the course record and wanted to get under 17 minutes. The course was great and the crowds fabulous." For complete 5K results and more, go to: www.PittsburghMarathon.com
