Drew Griffith from Butler (PA) and Zach Hillhouse of Pleasant Grove (UT) made history Saturday evening.
Griffith, who already ran the fourth-fastest time in high school history at the PIAA State Championships in May with a mark of 3:57:72, went 3:59.00 to claim the championship title. The Notre Dame recruit led the race from start to finish, but it was Hillhouse who challenged him down the homestretch to push the pace into another gear.
Even though he just came up short of the title, Hillhouse had a breakthrough moment.
Entering the meet, Hillhouse had a personal best of 4:05 in the mile and 4:04 in the 1,600m. Today he walked away by becoming the 23rd boy in high school history to break four minutes and the 21st outdoors.
For the first time in his high school career, Hillhouse crossed the finish line in 3:59.62 for second.
In third was Marcus Reilly, who went 4:01.16.
