There was a lot of buzz about the professional races at the 2024 BMW Berlin Marathon. But behind them, there was a secondary race: Could enough runners cross the line to beat the record for the largest World Marathon Major by number of finishers? It was going to be a close one: the 2018 NYC Marathon was at the time the world's largest-ever marathon with 52,812 finishers, but that mark was surpassed the following year at NYC with 53,640 finishers (53,520 runners plus wheelchair racers and handcyclists), a number which some thought might never be beat after the COVID-19 pandemic curtailed in-person racing one year later.
