Crater Demolishes National HS Record In DMR At New Balance Nationals

At New Balance Nationals Outdoor, Crater High School slashed the national high school record in the DMR, which stood for 23 years.

Crater Demolishes National HS Record In DMR At New Balance Nationals

There's no better way to start the fourth and final day of New Balance Nationals Outdoor than with a new national high school record in the boys distance medley relay. 

Crater High School(OR) obliterated the previous best by nearly five seconds as they stopped the clock at 9:44.30 on Sunday at Franklin Field.

Tayvon Kitchen, Nicholas Kube, Caleb Doddington, and Josiah Tostenson toed the line with a goal of being national champions. 

But at the end of the morning, they were crowned as national high school record holders as well. 

Kitchen handed the baton off to Kube in second place after his 1,200m leg where he split 3:00.03. Kube split 49.49 on the 400m leg to move up into the lead. Between Doddington and Tostenson, they were able to maintain their lead. Doddington split 1:52.75 for 800m and Tostenson anchored the relay with a 4:02.04 carry on the 1,600m leg. 

Collectively, the boys came together and broke the previous record which stood since 2001 with a 9:49.78 by South Lakes High School from Reston, Virginia. 

Ridgefield (CT) challenged Crater for the entirety of the race as they also dipped under the previous record with a 9:44.44 for second. Westfield was third in 9:50.11.
