The entry is in and the pace is set. Grant Fisher has asked that the BU Valentine Invitational men's 5,000m be paced at a 12:42 target time on Friday evening.
Effectively, Grant Fisher is asking for a world record pace. The world all-time mark is 12:49.60 set by Kenenisa Bekele in February of 2004. Since then, no other man has broke 12:50.
The BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational will be streamed LIVE on FloTrack on Friday and Saturday (Feb 14-15).

A couple of weeks ago, FloTrack reported that Grant Fisher would be targeting the American record of 12:51.61 set by Woody Kincaid in 2023. It appears that Fisher's motivations have changed since then.
Last week, Grant Fisher broke the Indoor 3,000m world record at the 2025 Millrose Games. Fisher ran 7:22.91 and held off the Olympic 1,500m Champion, Cole Hocker, in the waning moments of the race. Hocker's time was a 7:23.14, also below the previous world record.
Perhaps that run gave Fisher some confidence. He was keen on asking meet organizers at the BU Valentine Invitational for a 12:42 pace.
Woody Kincaid's 12:51.61 is the fourth-fastest time in world history, and only two seconds separates the American best from the world best.
This record attempt will be Fisher's third race in 12 days. On Feb. 2, Fisher ran a 3:33.99 1,500m for second at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. He then ran his record-setting 3,000m at the Millrose Games on Feb. 8.
Fisher won't be alone in his world record attempt. Frenchman Jimmy Gressier is seeded at 12:54.97, which would equal the outdoor personal best that he ran at the 2024 Oslo Diamond League Meeting. Two weeks ago, he ran a 13:00.54 5,000m at the BU Terrier Classic, and just last week he broke the French 3K national record at the 2025 Millrose Games, running 7:30.18.
Notably, a 12:42 pace would require 4:03.84 1600m splits. A pace-setter would need to average 400m splits of 1:00.96. Fisher would need to come through 3,000m at 7:37 pace.
