Grant Fisher has set a new World Record in the 5,000m at the 2025 BU Valentine Invitational, running 12:44.09. Fisher shattered the previous World Record of 12:49.60 set by Kenenisa Bekele in February of 2004.

Fisher also surpassed the previous American Record of 12:51.61 set by Woody Kincaid in 2023.

The achievement is Fisher's second World Record in as many weeks. Last Saturday (Feb 8), Fisher ran 7:22.91 to win the Millrose Games and set the 3,000m Indoor World Record.

Fisher took advantage of his early pacesetters and settled in behind the two leaders. Jimmy Gressier tucked in behind Fisher. The first pacer brought the leaders through 1,200m in 3:02, though Fisher nipped for a more consistent effort. Eventually, the second pacer was able to find a strong rhythm and Fisher settled back in behind. 

Around the halfway point, the pacer dropped and Fisher quickly inserted some pace. Henry Mcluckie's last lap as the pacer was 31.42. Fisher's next lap was a 30.63 as he hit the 2,600m mark.

That quick insertion of pace knocked Gressier off of Fisher's shoulder and he began to lose ground on the American quickly.

Fisher was then by himself for the final 2,000m of the race, and he was approaching lap traffic quickly. The veteran was able to remain calm and smooth through the lap traffic, swinging out to lane two and three. The raucous crowd urged him forward and he continued to press forward.

Eventually, Fisher took the bell lap and unleashed his patented last-lap kick, closing in 29.28. He crossed the line in 12:44.09.

Gressier took second in 12:54.92, setting a new French National Record in the event. He posted a 13:00.54 at the BU Terrier Classic two weeks ago. Yaseen Abdalla (Arkansas) finished in third and crossed the lined as the top collegian in 13:09.99.
