Many great moments have happened at Franklin Field throughout the years of this historic event, which is also the most prestigious meet in America. Previous participants include Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt, Wilma Rudolph, Vashti Cunningham, Nia Akins, etc.
Ahead of the 2025 Penn Relays, here are five big things that happened during last year's event.
How To Watch Penn Relays 2025
1. Quincy Wilson Proved To Be The Real Deal
- Wilson competed on behalf of Bullis School and put the world on notice after splitting 44.37 seconds for 400 meters in the 4x400 heat.
- That time was good enough for the fastest effort ever made by a high schooler in any relay and gave his school the top seed in the men's Championship of America.
- However, in the final, his team would come up short after the third runner fell during the hand-off, but Wilson almost single-handedly caught up fully and won the race, clocking a 44-second split.
2. Harvard Women Made Program History
- During the women's collegiate Championship of America race, the Harvard women made history by setting an NCAA record with a 10:37.55 time.
- With this incredible time, it was the first time since 1936 that the Harvard Crimson won since 1936.
- The record broken by the women eclipsed the record held by Villanova for over thirty years, 10:48.38.
3. NC State Teammates Dominated 10000M Championship
- In the College Women's 10000-meter Championship, NC State gained an impressive performance from Kelsey Chmiel and Leah Stephens.
- For Chmiel, it was the first time the 11-time All-American had competed since October, when she was injured, ultimately ending her cross-country season.
- Stephens and Chmiel both finished with terrific times. Stephens finished in first place with a 33:09.25 time, and Chmiel at 33:15.66.
4. Vashti Cunningham Wins At Penn Relays Again
- Two-time Olympian won the Olympic development women's high jump by clearing 1.84 meters at last year's Penn Relays.
- Cunningham winning this event added to an astonishing milestone of winning first place in the high jump event at every indoor and outdoor track and field in the United States since 2017.
- The high jump victory in the relays last year marked seven years since her first appearance.
5. South Florida Established Themselves As A Big-Time
- It was a standout weekend for South Florida at the relays last year after winning the 4x200s men's and women's Championship of America.
- The Bulls' men also won the 4x100 and placed third in the 4x400, while the women made a final appearance in the 4x100.
- South Florida hopes to have an encore of that team's performances or even better, as the school has confirmed its participation in the upcoming Penn Relays.
