The Week Ahead- (May 12-18)
Though the end is near for the most college track and field athletes pro athletes are just starting their bid for a top three spot on this year's Olympic team. For college athletes this weekend is for all the bragging rights as a majority of conference championships will be held. Track is not like football in that each team in every conference will be able to compete against each other at the same time for their championship. After this weekend teams/individuals will then set their sites on regional meets in hopes of qualifying for nationals. This has been a long track season but you better believe that those who make it to nationals will try their hardest to get a qualifying mark for the U.S. Olympic Trials. All this talk about regionals the NJCAA Championships at South Plains College will be the first of five national championships to be contested. This weekend is also the kick off of the professional outdoor track season, which will start with the Adidas Track Classic. From now on to the time of the trials every meet's competition will be more and more intense than the previous with athletes coming out of the woodwork to strive for a qualifier or to get a few more races under the belt before the big race. Trying to pick who is going to represent the U.S. In Beijing for the 100, 400, and 1500 for the men and women is like trying to pick a needle out of a haystack. The US is loaded in these events and this weekend could possibly bring light to those that will get the honor of representing their country at the Olympics. The Adidas Track Classic is a great meet to start this season off with the same events being the hotly contested ones. There will also be a few top international athletes in these races to give a good gauge on how our athletes are doing compared to the rest of the world. In the 100 meter race the men have a great field with Tyson Gay, Michael Rodgers, Wallace Spearmon, and Shawn Crawford competing against each other. The women's 100 meter race is just as competitive with the highlight being the race between Jamicia's Veronica Campbell against the USA's Allyson Felix, Lauryn Williams, Kerron Stewart and Sanya Richards. Everyone already knows the strength of America's 400 meter runners and this race will display it once again with the likes of Andrew Rock and Jeremy Wariner competing against Canada's finest Tyler Christopher on the men's side. America's 400 meter women happen to be just as strong in the 200 meter races. This weekend they have chosen for the most part to compete in the 200 meter race with the foursome of Allyson Felix, Shalonda Solomon, Natasha Hastings, and Bianca Knight battling it out. This year the United States could truly produce its strongest 4x400 teams for both men and women ever. However the biggest race this weekend well at least if your a distance fan will be the men's 1500. The 1500 meter race is the last and in my opinion the most anticipated race at this year's Olympic Trials. This weekend Adam Goucher, Bernard Lagat, Nick Symmonds, Lopez Lomong, and Chris Lukezic will face international tops Nick Willis and Kevin Sullivan. This won't be the only big race this weekend the Healthy Kidney 10k will be held in Central Park. Ritz will not be running due to injury, but his replacement is ace marathoner Abderrahim Goumri. If he or any other of the elite runners break Ritz's course record they will receive a bonus of $20,000 (letsrun.com). Although most conferences will be hosting their respective track meets there will still be a few college meets for those that have already competed at their conference championships such as the Georgia Tech Invitational. Flotrack's very own Ryan Fenton will be on site at the Georgia Tech Invite to take play by play coverage of all the events and races. Any Flotrack or track and field fans for that matters make sure to stop by and maybe even get to help Ryan commentate a race or two. The other few chances this weekend is the Louisville Cardinal Twilight, North Texas Open, Willamette Last Chance Qualifier, and Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance Qualifier. Good luck to all the teams/individuals competing this weekend be safe and run fast! Always make sure to check out the News and Results on the Flotrack Website for any extra information!
