It was a solid day for US track and field at the Prefontaine Classic today. As usual, the sprints were a US and Jamaican affair at yet another international meet. Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown won the 100 over compatriot Shelly-Ann Fraser and American Carmelita Jeter. LaShauntea Moore was 4th also dipping under 11 seconds. NCAA Champ Blessing Okagbare was 5th. Walter Dix beat Tyson Gay in the 200 19.72 to 19.76. David Oliver tied the American Record in the 110H with a 12.90, blowing the field away. Ryan Wilson and Ronnie Ash were back in 2nd and 3rd at 13.16 and 13.19. Allyson Felix, who is looking to do the 200/400 double at the next World and Olympic Championships beat a great field of World and Olympic 400 medalists in the women's 400. US and World Indoor Champ Debbie Dunn faded to 4th. Lashinda Demus continues her quest for the 400H World Record with a win here in 53.0 over Jamaica's Kaliese Spencer.
In the distance races we saw the recent college grads holding it down. Phoebe Wright, finally able to run without having to go through rounds, chopped 2 seconds off her PR, running 1:58.22 to get 4th. US Champ Alysia Johnson also PRed with a 1:58.84. Anna Pierce lost in the 800 for the first time in over a year, but still ran a 1:59 low and last year's Pre Champ Maggie Vessey just got under 2, showing she is already ahead of where she was last year. Andrew Wheating took it to the US's 1500 Olympians Lopez Lomong, Bernard Lagat, and Leo Manzano in the Bowerman Mile with a huge run of 3:51. Lomong also had small PR of 3:53, Lagat ran 3:54. AJ Acosta was the 3rd fastest American on the day, running 3:53.7 placing second to Aussie Ryan Gregson in the 'B' section. Rounding out the recent graduate PRs was Bridget Franek who ran a nice 9:32 in the steeple for 5th place. In the men's 1000, Abubaker Kaki won in a Sudanese record of 2:13. US 800 Champ Nick Symmonds was 3rd in 2:16 with Duane Solomon, Tyler Mulder, and Jacob Hernandez going 5-7 in the 2:17-2:18 range. In the 5ks, Shalane Flanagan placed second to Tirunesh Dibaba with a 14:49. She was 5 seconds up on 3rd, former Texas Tech star Sally Kipyego. Amy Begley was the only other American under 15, with a 5th place 14:56 showing. The men did not fair as well in the 5k as Chris Solinsky, already under 13 this season, struggled over the last 600 to finish 7th in 13:08. Training partner Matt Tegenkamp was even further back in 13th (13:25). 2 men were under 13 in the race, marking the first time it was done on American soil; Tariku Bekele (12:58.9) and Dejen Gebremeskel (12:59.3). Now all the action heads overseas to Europe where Ryan and Floski Jeremy are headed now.
