Day 2, Top 5 from Eugene 2012 Olympic Trials

Top 5 Performances at 2012 US Olympic Trials, Day 2:

1. We have to give performance of the day to decathlon superstar Ashton Eaton who is now the World Record Holder in the decathlon with a grand total of 9039 points. Eaton annihilated the American record of 8891 points held by Dan O'Brien and smashed the world record of 9026 held by Roman Sebrle.  Eaton won 7 out of the 10 events held over the past two days and finished the 1500 meters alongside a roaring crowd in a time of 4:14.  Not a bad way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the decathlon.

2. The women's 100m final was a huge upset as two-time silver medalist Allyson Felix finished in a third place tie with Jeneba Tarmoh.  The race was established from the beginning by Carmelita Jeter who came through the line in a 10.92 followed by Tianna Madison for 2nd. 3rd place however is still up in the air as both Tarmoh and Felix ran a time of 11.07 for a photo finish that has yet to determine the third place position.  In a press conference shortly after the race, USATF's Communication Chief Jill Greer announced that a procedure will be conducted shortly to decide on the official third place finish between Tarmoh and Felix. Greer has not announced when the third place position will be decided.

3. Bryan Clay getting disqualified in the 110m hurdles this morning was the heart-breaking performance of the day.  The 2008 Gold Medalist stumbled over the 9th hurdle and pushed the 10th hurdle over, taking him out of the scoring for that event.  Clay also fouled three times in the discus. The 110m hurdles disqualification pushed him down the ranks into 16th place.  Clay came back however later in the day with an impressive showing in the javelin by finishing in 2nd place with a throw of 66.80.

4. Lolo Jones making her 2nd Olympic team by finishing in 3rd place with a time of 12.86 was a crowd pleaser tonight.  It was an uphill battle for Jones who had run a 12.75 going into the Trials, but she made it happen by running hard through the preliminary rounds and the final. Jones punched her ticket to London alongside Dawn Harper, who powered through in a 12.73, followed by teammate Kellie Wells in a blazing 12.77.

5. Justin Gatlin also had a stellar performance in the preliminary round of the men's 100 meters. Gatlin ran a smooth 9.90 to easily win the final heat of the event, putting himself at the top of the field in front of Tyson Gay who ran a comfortable 10.00.
