Haverford Breaks the Streak in DIII as the New Nationally Top-Ranked Team

October 17, 2012

NEW ORLEANS – The streak has been broken. For the 24 previous voting weeks, the men’s team at North Central (Ill.) has been ranked No. 1 by the nation’s coaches in NCAA Division III cross country. Now, the top-ranked spot goes to the Haverford Fords according to the latest poll of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Calvin’s men slides up from No. 6 to No. 2 while North Central slips to No. 3 – their lowest spot on the poll since 2008.

Haverford spoiled North Central’s long-running No. 1 ranking in 2010 as they captured the NCAA title from the Cardinals. North Central came back to win the national crown last season.

In the women’s poll, MIT retains their top spot. In fact, the top five teams – No. 2 Johns Hopkins, No. 3 Williams, No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, and No. 5 Middlebury – held their ground from last week’s poll.

NCAA Division III Championship History

The Fords of Haverford have competed mostly against Division I competition in the last few weeks and have earned five of eight first-place votes. Last weekend, the crew placed fourth among many DI schools at the Princeton Invitational. A couple weeks before, Haverford was placed in elite “Gold” division of the Paul Short Run and held their own.

No. 2 men’s team Calvin has three first-place votes and scored the largest victory of the past weekend, knocking off then-No. 1 North Central at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational. With senior Dan Kerr leading the way, the Knights, then ranked No. 6, scored 52 points to the Cardinals’ 58. The head-to-head victory for Calvin was enough for the voters to rank the Knights ahead of North Central.

This upcoming weekend will be light in Division III as teams gear up for conference championships that begin on October 27.
