Saint Augustine's Men, GVSU Women Top DII Rankings Amid Shake-upFebruary 5, 2013 NEW ORLEANS – This week marks the first in the 2012-13 Division II U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Computer Rankings in which times, marks and scores exclusively from the current season were used – resulting in a big-time rankings shake-up. Saint AugustineÂÂÂ’s takes over the top spot of the menÂÂÂ’s poll for the first time since week three of the 2011 season, and while the Grand Valley State women remain No. 1 for the 20th consecutive edition of the rankings, their hold on the top spot is significantly looser.

Bests Though the Falcons of Saint AugustineÂÂÂ’s were idle this past weekend, they were the beneficiaries of the removal of preseason times, marks and scores from the rankings calculations. They made a net gain of 27.21 points for a total of 203.33. Ashland jumped two spots to No. 2 behind the combination of three top-five times/marks this past weekend and the absence of preseason data to make a net gain of 56.62 points for a total of 188.07. Drew Windle ran the DivisionÂÂÂ’s best 800 at 1:49.36, the 4×400 relay team posted the second-best time at 3:12.16, and vaulter Eric Klucar ranks fourth nationally at 16-4¾ (5.00m). Defending National Champion Grand Canyon slipped 13.02 points and a spot to No.3 with 170.03, but it was No. 4 Adams State that took the largest hit, losing 81.15 points to slide from No. 1 a week ago with a total of 128.70. Grand Valley State moved up two spots to No. 5 with 127.29 to round out the top ten. The GVSU women remain No. 1, but their lead took a serious hit. The Lakers lost a net total of 19.39 points for a total of 209.21, but the biggest factor in the tightening race was Lincoln (Mo.) gaining a net total of 35.04 points to jump to second with 203.73 points behind six DII top-10 individual performances. National Athlete of the Week Donna-Lee Hylton led the way with the top 400 performance in DII (54.56) and the ninth-fastest 200 (24.38). Despite a weekend away from competition, Academy of Art improved 21.14 points and two spots to No. 3 with a score of 150.33, while Ashland also jumped two spots to No. 4 with 119.30. Grand Canyon slid one position to No. 5 with 115.32 points. Like their male counterparts, the Adams State womenÂÂÂ’s squad was the hardest hit by the subtraction of preseason data, as the Grizzlies lost 124.07 net points and slid to No. 13 with 61.77 points. The National Computer Team Rankings project how a team will finish in a National Championship Meet setting, rather than a triangular or dual. The rankings are compiled from meet data in the 2012-13 season. The next round of computer rankings will be released February 12. The 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held in Birmingham, Ala., March 7-9.
