American Grant Holloway capped his first appearance at a global championship with a gold medal in the 110-meter hurdles. The 21-year-old ran 13.10 to distance a loaded field that included reigning world and Olympic champion Omar McLeod of Jamaica, who stumbled on a hurdle and was disqualified.

Sergey Shubenkov, the authorized neutral athlete, earned the silver medal for the second consecutive world championships in 13.15, while Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France won bronze in 13.18.

McLeod ran to the extreme right side of his lane, and fell into Orlando Ortega's lane next to him when he clipped the hurdle late in the race. Ortega, the 2016 silver medalist, flinched and threw his hands up in the air at the finish as he placed fifth overall in 13.30. At the time of his collision, he was in position to challenge for the podium.

The Spanish team appealed the results, stating that Ortega was impeded and deserved a chance to either re-run the race alone or redo the race entirely. As an alternative, Team Spain requested that Ortega receive a medal to reflect his third place position at the time of the incident. It was all denied.

American Devon Allen was seventh in 13.70.

Holloway raced just once between the USATF Championships in late July, where he placed runner-up to Daniel Roberts, and the IAAF World Championships, but once in Doha, he captured three consecutive decisive victories.

Roberts, perhaps his biggest rival who pushed him on the NCAA circuit during the spring season, was disqualified for knocking over a competitor's hurdle in the semi-final round.

Holloway turned professional this summer after winning three straight NCAA Outdoor Championship titles in the 110m hurdles. In 2017, he just missed his first trip a world championships when he placed fourth at USAs.
