2010 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational - Men's 10k - American Record (Chris Solinsky 26:59)
May 2, 2010
Chris Solinsky breaking the American Record at 10,000 meters (10K) at the 2010 Payton Jordan Invite at Stanford University. Solinsky ran a time of 26:59.60 to break the American Record by 13 seconds. The hype leading into this race made it a highly anticipated event. Heading into the 2010 Payton Jordan Invitational Galen Rupp and coach Alberto Salazar said they were going for the American record. With a worry of pollen in the air that day, it was unknown as to where the attempt would go down...either Eugene or Palo Alto. The morning of race day the call was made and off to Stanford they went. A very unsuspecting Chris Solinsky happened to be on the starting list for his debut 10k. In the early stages of the race the pacers got off to slow start, but as things progress pace wasn't the question. Suddenly everyone wondered, would it be someone other than Rupp to win the race and possibly break the American record... Also in this race the Canadian and Collegiate records were both broken. Simon Bairu broke the Canadian 10k record by running a time of 27:23. Sam Chelanga of Liberty ran a time of 27:08 to break his own Collegiate Record by 20 seconds.
