Deborah Maier battles up front off little training to finish 3rd at 2012 NCAA D1 Outdoor Champs
Jun 7, 2012
After a big run of 32:12 at the Payton Jordan 10k it looked like Deborah Maier had moved to another level as she moved to #3 on the all-time collegiate list (behind Lisa Koll and Sally Kipyego). As the season progressed Maier had disappeared and was unable to run another race until the NCAA West Prelim due to a hip injury. Although it was not 100%, Maier was able to qualify to the NCAA Championships where she let herself take a chance. Maier went out under PR pace with a 5:04 open mile and after leading much of the way went on to finish 3rd with a solid time of 32:47, less than six seconds off the win. With her hip on the up and up, Maier will now look to the Olympic Trials in Eugene where she may have an outside shot at the Olympic Team.....if she can run the A standard of 31:45!
