Rupp Breaks Through to Beat Lagat - Day 5 Performance of the Night
Galen Rupp can officially be mentioned in the same breath as Steve Prefontaine.

Rupp, the 10k champion at these Trials, doubled back to win the 5000 meters in an Olympic Trials record 13:22.67, eclipsing Prefonaine's previous meet record of 13:22.80.

Perhaps more importantly, Rupp earned his first victory against distance stalwart Bernard Lagat in dramatic fashion. It almost looked like a signature Lagat victory as he swung wide with 100 to go and moved past Rupp. This time was different though as Rupp mustered all he had and muscled past Lagat over the last 50 meters.

Rupp became the first man to win the 5k/10k double at the Olympic Trials since Curtis Stone did it in 1952.

What does this mean for London?

If the third place finish at Pre Classic wasn't enough to convince you, Rupp is the real deal. He's now beaten Lagat to whom he was previously 0-14 against during his career.

It isn't time to panic for Lagat. Back in 2007 Lagat was outkicked by Alan Webb and Leo Manzano in the 1500 meters at the 2007 U.S. championships. He went on to win the 1500/5k double at Worlds, so no need to worry.

For his bombin' kick and double victory here in Eugene, Galen Rupp earns the day five performance of the night.

*Honorable mention goes to Kim Conley. She was a 16:20-something runner in college while and UC Davis and is now headed to London to run in the Olympics. Pretty special stuff.
