Nine Cavaliers Named to All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track and Field Teams
Squads feature five outdoor All-Americans
GREENSBORO, N.C.—Nine members of the Virginia track and field team have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Teams, the conference
announced Friday (June 28). Morgane Gay,
Abbey Karin,
Jordan Lavender, Kathleen Stevens and
Catherine White were listed on the womenÂ’s team, while
Kevin Anding,
Andy Fahringer, Sean Keveren and
Marcus Robinson were recognized on the menÂ’s squad.
For Anding, Gay and Keveren, this is the second time they have been listed on the All-ACC Academic outdoor squad. Anding was a four-time indoor honoree, while Lavender was named to the 2012 indoor team.
Gay, a native of Bethesda, Md., earned second-team All-America honors with a 11th-place finish in the womenÂ’s 1,500 meters at the NCAA Championships. She earned two silver medals in the 1,500m and 5,000 meters at the ACC Championships in
April. At the national meet, Gay became the sixth Division I female to compete at the NCAA cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field national meets in each of the last two academic years.
A native of Byfield, Mass., Karin advanced to the NCAA East Preliminaries in the womenÂ’s javelin after earning a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships. Karin also won the javelin at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational.
Lavender, a native Nashville, Tenn., earned All-ACC honors in the womenÂ’s 400 meters, finishing third in 53.44, a new Virginia freshman record. Lavender finished 17th in the 400 meters at the NCAA East Preliminaries.
A native of Blacksburg, Va., Stevens was a honorable mention All-American in the womenÂ’s 5,000 meters after finishing 21st at the NCAA Championships. Stevens advanced to the national meet after finishing 12th with a PR of 16:26.91 at the
NCAA East meet.
White, a native of Roanoke, Va., earned second team All-America honors in the womenÂ’s 10,000 meters, finishing 10th in 33:21.55, the second-fastest time in school history. White won the ACC title in the 10,000m and placed third in the 5,000
meters.
A native of Houston, Texas, Anding was a member of the menÂ’s 4x400 relay that captured the ACC crown and broke the school record at the NCAA East Preliminaries (3:07.11). Anding also finished sixth in the 400m at the conference meet.
Fahringer, a native of Whitehall, Pa., won the men’s javelin championship at the Penn Relays and set a new school record of 75.19m (246’ 8”) at the Virginia Challenge. Fahringer earned silver in the event at the ACC Championships.
A native of Brentwood, Tenn., Keveren earned honorable mention All-America honors with an 18th-place finish in the menÂ’s 10,000 meters. Keveren earned silver in the 10,000m at the conference meet in a time of 29:31.86, the fifth-fastest
time in school history.
Robinson, a native of Richmond, Va., broke the school record in the menÂ’s triple jump in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Robinson earned first-team All-America honors in both seasons, placing fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships
and sixth at the national outdoor meet. He won the ACC Championship for both indoor and outdoor and took home the menÂ’s triple jump championship at the Penn Relays.
ClemsonÂ’s Alyssa Kulik and Florida StateÂ’s Gonzalo Barroilhet were named the ACC WomenÂ’s and MenÂ’s Scholar-Athletes of the Year, respectively.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.
