Bayer, Butler Advance on Day 7 at Trials

EUGENE, Ore. - Andy Bayer and Kind Butler both advanced on day seven at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Bayer made it into the finals of the 1,500 meters and Butler advanced to the 200-meter semifinals. IU assistant coach Abbie Stechschulte (Norton) finished day one of the heptathlon in
 
Bayer clocked a time of 3:42.56 for sixth in his heat of the 1,500 semifinals. His time wouldÂ’ve won the other semifinal, meaning he had the fastest non-automatic advancing time. Bayer, the reigning NCAA champion will run in the final at 4:37 p.m. ET on Sunday.
 
Butler ran 20.69 in the prelims of the 200m to advance on time. His time was 19th out of the 21 advancing runners. He will run in heat one of three in tomorrowÂ’s semifinals which start at 9 p.m. ET.
 
Stechschulte (Norton) scored 3,547 points on day one of the heptathlon. The IU alum and current assistant coach ran lifetime bests in the 100m hurdles (13.76) and 200 meters (24.88). She finished day one in seventh place and just 225 points out of third. Her score is 14 points ahead of her PR total at the U.S.A. Championships last year. She will conclude the heptathlon on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800m, with action beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
 
Tiffany Howard took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 17.12m (56-2). The 2010 IU alum trains in Bloomington, where she works for IU Athletics.
 
Sarah Pease took 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase in 9:53.62. She outkicked Mason Cathey of Saucony less than half a second.
