Whiting Qualifies for Olympic Shot Put Final

Medal round set for 3:30 p.m., EDT, Monday

 

LONDON – Nittany Lion volunteer assistant coach Ryan Whiting is on his way to the Olympic shot put final, thanks to an automatic-qualifying performance in the event prelims, Monday morning at Olympic Stadium.  The event final is set for 3:30 p.m., EDT, Monday afternoon with live coverage available on NBCOlympics.com.

 

Whiting, who is the defending IAAF World Indoor Champion in the event, was one of three American athletes to advance, including Reese Hoffa and Christian Cantwell.  Whiting, who will be among 12 competitors in this afternoon’s medal round, saved his best throw for last in the prelim, launching an effort of 68-2.25 (20.78), which bettered the automatic qualifying standard of 67-9 (20.65).  The Harrisburg, Pa., native’s toss was the fourth best of the morning session, behind Hoffa’s event-leading 70-1 (21.36).

 

Also competing on Monday morning was former Nittany Lion Shana Cox of Great Britain.  Cox – the 2008 NCAA Champion in the 400- and 4x400-meter relay - will also automatically advance to the next run after running 52.01 to finish third in her preliminary heat of the 400.  She will step on to the track again on Saturday, with the semi-final round set for 3:05 p.m., EDT.
