Oscar Pistorius Formally Charged with Murder; Hearings Resume on Tuesday

Double-amputee Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius appeared in court on Friday morning to
learn he will be battling a premeditated murder charge over the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkampf.

Pistorius will be spending this weekend at Brooklyn Police Station in custody. Further investigations will take place before Tuesday and Pistorius will meet will his defense team.

Pistorius broke down in tears multiple times as he listened to his charge. Barry Roux, the advocate for Pistorius, described him as in an “extreme traumatized state of mind.” Barry Bateman of Eyewitness News Pretoria sat behind Pistorius and reported his sobs and gasps were audible.

As a result, it was ruled that there will be no live recordings of the proceedings and photos will only be allowed when court is not in session. (What this means is that there will be many photos of Pistorius walking into court and out.

The bail hearing will take place on Tuesday at 9 a.m. local time. He could submit a plea as early as then. According to the statement released by his family, the “alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms.” Pistorius is likely to plead not guilty.

Update 1:30 p.m: Ato Boldon said his comment on the Oscar Pistorius news is much like everyone else "shock and awe, let's wait and see."

On MSNBC's News Nation with Tamron Hall, Boldon was quick to point out that the original reports of the story could have led people to quickly side with the idea of this being an accident. Now the tide has turned and there are more question marks in the air.

There is still yet to be a statement released by Pistorius' manager or inner circle claiming his innocence. The only statement has come from his family.

Nike has made headlines today as Pistorius joins a list of controversial athletes once sponsored by the shoe company. Boldon believes the "I am the bullet in the chamber" ad derived more from Pistorius' camp.

"Its not a secret that Oscar Pistorius has an affinity for guns. He's already been quoted as saying when I can't sleep this is what I go do," Boldon told MSNBC. "I am sure that this is more of a case of him suggesting that to Nike to represent him as opposed to the other way around. Either way when we get to this point and that ad is up there, it's certainly not a good look."
