On September 24, 2023, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia destroyed the women's marathon world record, running 2:11:53 to become the first women to ever run under 2:14:00. Assefa broke the record of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kosgei at the Chicago Marathon in 2019.
Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men's race in 2:02:42 to become the first runner to win the Berlin Marathon five times.
