AFTER DELAY, OREGON & OKLAHOMA STATE DECLARED NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSBy David Monti(c) 2012 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved. Used with permission.LOUISVILLE, KY (17-Nov) -- After timing problems, two protests and some tears, the women of the University of Oregon and the men of Oklahoma State University were declared NCAA Division I Cross Country Champions here on a crisp, sunny day at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.  Iowa State's Betsy Saina and Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka won the individual titles.Saina, a senior who finished ninth in these championships last year, won the 6-Kilometer race in a long sprint against the other two athletes who were favored for victory --Dartmouth's Abbey D'Agostino and Oregon's Jordan Hasay-- who finished second and third, respectively.  The trio had been pulled along in the early kilometers by Cal Poly freshman Laura Hollander who set a fast pace of 6:23 through 2-kilometers.  Saina tried to remain patient, and kept a close eye on D'Agostino and Hasay."I looked back and I could see Jordan was here and Abbey was here, and I know, like, what they are doing," Saina told reporters after the race.  "I'm just going to wait until, like, the last minute."She did just that.  In the final 30 meters, she hit her top speed, going through the finish line in 19:27.9.  Hasay, clearly exhausted, could not hold off D'Agostino who was credited with second place, although both women were given the same time of 19:28.6."I don't know what else I could have done," said Hasay who, finished second at these championships last year as a junior by just six tenths of a second.  "I was trying to go last and I did, but she just kind of held me off.  It sucks, you know, being that close again.  Hopefully our team did well."They did, but that was not the initial news they received.  In the initial cut of the results, Oregon fifth-year senior Alexi Pappas, D'Agostino's former teammate at Dartmouth, was left out of the results (she finished 8th overall and 3rd in the team scoring).  That put Ray Treacy's Providence College Lady Friars in first place, a result which was announced as official by the public address announcer.  The Oregon women huddled with their assistant coach Maurica Powell and wept openly in the recovery tent.About 20 minutes later, after a protest by Oregon head coach Robert Johnson, Pappas was added back to the results, giving the Ducks 114 points to Providence's 183 who were relegated to second."In one way or another every runner for Oregon stepped up and ran in a way they hadn't before," Coach Johnson told GoDucks.com. "I am so proud of our women's team and the job done by assistant coach Maurica Powell."Treacy accepted the result, but was frustrated with the process."We were national champions for ten minutes," Treacy told a caller on his cell phone. But the protests weren't over.  Florida State's Amanda Winslow, who had finished 17th overall and 10th in the team scoring, had also been missed in the results, initially reported as "disqualified."  When she was reinstated, that moved Florida State to fourth place with 202 points, just four behind third place Stanford.Florida State coach Karen Harvey was too angry to speak on the record, but said she was greatly disappointed with the technical execution of the meet and the impact it had on her athletes.OKLAHOMA STATE, KITHUKA RUNAWAY WINNERSThe men's 10-kilometer contest was far less dramatic.  Oklahoma State dominated the team competition with 72 points, about half of what second place University of Wisconsin scored (135).  Their top three men --Girma Mecheso, Tom Farrell and Shadrack Kipchirchir-- all finished in the top-11 of the team scoring.  The University of Colorado finished third with 158 points."I'm proud of them," Coach Dave Smith said of his Cowboys team.  "Some guys came through big-time today: Joseph Manilafasha (24th/17th team scoring), had an awesome race.  Obviously, our front three, I knew they were good.  I mean, our top-3 have been great all year for us."In the individual contest, Texas Tech junior Kennedy Kithuka scored a mild upset in beating Arizona's Lawi Lalang, the defending champion, and his Arizona teammate Stephen Sambu.  Off of a very fast early pace (4:32 for the opening mile), Kithuka surged to the lead just past the halfway point and ran away with the title in a course record 28:31.3."After 5-K I went and I see they were relaxing," Kithuka said of Lalang and Sambu.  "Then I broke away.  That was my plan."Lalang ended up third in 28:51.8, well behind Sambu (28:38.6).  He said he knew in the early going that it wasn't his day."I knew I was actually losing from the start," Lalang lamented.  "I didn't feel OK like I usually feel."  He continued: "You know what?  Let me just conserve my energy.  The next season's coming (indoor track).  I was already moving ahead."Top Results:WOMEN (6 km):Teams: 1. Lalang Will be Hard to Beat at NCAA XC Championships

LALANG WILL BE HARD TO BEAT AT NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPSBy David Monti(c) 2012 Race Results Weekly, all rights reservedLOUISVILLE, KY (16-Nov) -- Lawi Lalang, the defending NCAA Division I Cross Country champion from the University of Arizona, smiles as he speaks to a reporter here today.  The lanky Kenyan from the village of Chebaon in the Rift Valley is talking about Bernard Lagat, the two-time Olympic medalist who, like him, is coached by James Li.  Lagat, he says, has told him a secret."Sometimes we train with them," Lalang says of Lagat and his Olympic teammate Abdi Abdirahman.  "Every now and then when I am training I remember one thing that he told me.  He told me like this: you need to keep something inside you when you are just practicing.  Knowing that, you'll just take it out during the race."Like Lagat, Lalang is a game-day athlete.  At last year's cross country championships he comfortably beat the field by 14 seconds.  That set up a dominating year in 2012 where he set an NCAA 5000m indoor record of 13:08.28 at the Millrose Games (just behind Lagat's American record of 13:07.15), won both the NCAA 3000m and 5000m indoor titles, and took third in the 5000m at the NCAA outdoor championships.  He also clocked personal bests at 1500m (3:36.77), mile (3:55.09i), 3000m (7:44.48i), and 5000m outdoors (13:18.88).His fall cross country season has been no less impressive.  He won the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison on Oct. 27, setting a course record 23:03 for the 8-kilometer distance, then won the Pac-12 conference and NCAA West Regional titles.  He's clearly confident, but realizes that the race is a long way from being in the bag."It's going to be tough because there's a lot of tough guys out there," he says.  "But, I'm ready to go with them and fight for it. At the end of the day the winner will come out."Lalang is one of seven children (he has three brothers and three sisters).  His older brother Boaz is also coached by James Li, and won silver medals at 800m at both the IAAF World Indoor Championships in 2010 and the All Africa Games in 2011.  Lalang ran in high school in Kenya, but he said he did not receive any formal coaching.  All of his development, he said, took place in Arizona."I was not well-trained because I didn't have a coach," he explained.  "I was just talking with my brother and he was giving me some guidelines in what to do.  The only think I was doing was some long runs and some tempo runs, but I didn't do anything like core (training) or lifting."The last man to successfully defend his title at this meet was also a Kenyan, Sam Chelanga, who won in both 2009 and 2010 for Liberty University.  Interestingly, Lalang will have to beat two other strong Kenyans --his Arizona teammate Stephen Sambu and Texas Tech's Kennedy Kithuka-- to duplicate Chelanga's feat.  He thinks he can do it."I'm really confident," he said.  "It's a matter of going there and doing your best.  I think I have a chance."

Abbey D'Agostino Could Make History at NCAA XC Championships

D'AGOSTINO COULD MAKE HISTORY AT NCAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPSBy David Monti(c) 2012 Race Results Weekly, all rights reserved. Used with permission.LOUISVILLE, KY (16-Nov) -- When the 255 women line up for tomorrow's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park here, only one will wear the green kit of Dartmouth College.  Her long brown hair pulled back in a ponytail, 20 year-old junior Abbey D'Agostino won't have help from any teammates during the 6-kilometer event, but she'll also be free to run her own race and possibly make history: No Ivy League athlete has ever won this event in it's 32-year history. What sounds like a longshot on paper just might become reality.  D'Agostino, who's mother Donna ran track and cross country in college, became the first NCAA national track champion from Dartmouth in 38 years when she won the 5000m crown last June at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. But, what seemed like the end of a great season was only a stepping stone.  D'Agostino went on to make the finals of the USA Olympic Trials in Eugene last June in the same discipline and finished fifth in a dramatic sprint finish in a personal best 15:19.98.  She missed an Olympic Team spot by just 19/100ths of a second."Being at the Trials --I just keep saying this-- was a whole other world," D'Agostino told Race Results Weekly in an exclusive interview here today.  She continued: "The biggest thing that came out if it was what sort of mental state it takes for me to succeed at a level like that."But being a virtual unknown helped D'Agostino, a psychology major from Topsfield, Mass.  She was one of just one of five collegiate athletes in that contest, and expectations were low: she'd only won one important race so far in her career."There wasn't a ton of pressure, and that obviously helped," D'Agostino admitted.  She added: "The competition didn't intimidate me; I was just so thankful to be there."Unlike her key rival in tomorrow's race here, the University of Oregon's Jordan Hasay, D'Agostino began her collegiate career with no fanfare.  Recruited by a previous coach, she didn't meet current coach Mark Coogan, an Olympic marathoner in 1996, until she arrived at Dartmouth (they met the first day of practice).  Coogan said he recognized D'Agostino's talent quickly."We've had a good relationship from Day One," said Coogan.  "Abbey's a special runner; there's no doubt about it.  She'd be successful with anybody.  But, I think we do hit it off very well."Coogan first saw the chance for D'Agostino to win regional titles, but quickly realized she was destined for bigger things.  Last year, her first under Coogan, she progressed quickly throughout the track season and finished third at the 2011 NCAA Championships at 5000m.  She backed-up that performance up with a third place finish at these championships last year, beaten only by Villanova's Sheila Reid and Hasay.  Coogan said that his biggest contribution comes from the fact that he has competed at the highest levels in the sport and can provide D'Agostino with insights other coaches wouldn't have."I think the thing I really help her best with, like when we go to NCAA's or Olympic Trials, is I've done it," Coogan said.  "I've helped her realize that the best runners are just normal people.  They put their shorts on the same way.  They're no different, and there's no reason to be intimidated."Coming into tomorrow's meet, D'Agostino has raced a light schedule this fall.  She skipped the Heptagonal Championships on October 27 (essentially the Ivy League meet) to rest a sore hip flexor, then won her regional meet on November 9, in a controlled effort.  Coogan said that was important to protect her hip, especially given the poor condition of the course in Madison, Conn."The day before when we jogged the course it was a disaster, with snow and rain and wet," Coogan said.  He continued: "When were talking about the race we had the attitude, just win.  Just do what you have to do to win.  Don't make a big statement."Given D'Agostino's track credentials, the one-loop course here could play to her favor.  Florida State coach Karen Harvey called it "lightning fast" at a press conference here today.  That fit's D'Agostino's assessment as she is expecting a fast race."Mark and I were talking about this," she said.  "In general, it's pretty honest. You really have to be ready for anything.  You have to stay with that top group and not let any gaps form."D'Agostino said she is proud to represent the Ivy League, along with the Harvard women's squad which qualified as a team.  A true student-athlete (there are no pure athletic scholarships in the Ivy League) D'Agostino said there is no reason that an athlete from the Ivy League can't win."We're all the same at that line," she said.  "It just depends on who wants it the most."
