ARKANSAS WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

Heymsfield second at Pan Am Juniors

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Grace Heymsfield, a member of the University of Arkansas women’s track and field team, ran to a silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase Saturday at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships in Miramar, Fla. The Razorback distance runner crossed second in a time of 10:47.01, earning the second runner-up finish during the summer season.

Heymsfield finished only behind fellow Team USA member Alexandra Leptich of the University of Michigan. Heymsfield, in her first season running the steeplechase event, qualified for the Pan Am Junior event with her silver performance at the USA Junior Championships in June. During that race, the Elkins, Ark., native posted a personal-best time of 10:40.31, a 16-second improvement over her previous best at the time.

In addition to the American runners, the steeplechase field included athletes from Argentina, Canada and Peru. The collective effort of Heymfield and Leptich adds 18 points to the team total for Team USA. The three-day meet comes to a close Sunday evening.
