August 9, 2011

NEW ORLEANS – The men’s track & field team at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse was honored Tuesday as the Scholar Team of the Year in Division III for both the indoor and outdoor 2011 seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). UW-La Crosse earned the distinctions as a result of being the highest-placing team with at least a 3.10-cumulative GPA at the most recent NCAA indoor and outdoor championship, respectively. In addition, the USTFCCCA announced 64 teams as All-Academic teams for the track & field seasons.

UW-La Crosse reported a 3.14 team cumulative GPA through the spring 2011 semester, and, on the track, La Crosse was the third-place team at the NCAA indoor meet and second at the NCAA outdoor meet in 2011. In both championships, La Crosse finished just two points behind team champion North Central (Ill.).

Last week, seven team members – Jeremiah Burish, Matthew Gordy, Sean Harrington, Kellen McCrary, Andrew Novak, Robert Rohe, and Paul Yerhot – earned individual All-Academic status and each hold cumulative GPAs of 3.30 or greater. Yerhot led off La Crosse’s NCAA indoor champion 4x400-meter relay team. McCrary placed second and fourth in the nation in the long jump and triple jump, respectively, during the outdoor season and fifth indoors in the long jump. Novak was the NCAA outdoor runner-up in the shot put.
