LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After winning the Evansville Mid-America Opener team title two weeks ago, the University of Louisville men’s cross country team moved up in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association’s national poll to No. 19, the New Orleans-based organization announced Tuesday.

The No. 19 ranking is the program’s best mark since achieving No. 13 in 2007, warranted by the men’s squad capturing its first BIG EAST title in program history.

The Cardinal men entered the 2011 campaign ranked 20th-nationally in the USTFCCCA. In the season-opener, the squad’s only competition thus far, sophomore Tyler Byrne captured the individual title in the 6K with a time of 18:30. Junior Gordon Dooley placed runner-up (18:44), with sophomore Mattias Wolter finishing fourth (18:54) and freshman Andrew Stewart taking 10th (19:20).

In regional rankings, in which both squads are in the Southeast, the Cardinal men remained at No. 2, while the women’s squad checked in at No. 13.

On the men’s side, the BIG EAST leads all conferences with six programs in the top 30.

Louisville returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, in Annapolis, Md. The men’s race – the Navy Invitational is an 8K that begins at 11 a.m., with the women's 6K - the Salty Dog Invitational - following at 11:30 a.m.
