MSSU Stampede next for No. 15 Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The 15th-ranked University of Arkansas men’s cross country team continues its season Saturday morning at the Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. The men’s 8K race is scheduled for a 9:15 a.m. (CT) start.

“We’ll run a mix of our veterans and younger guys,” head coach Chris Bucknam said. “Coming off last weekend’s dual meet, this will be a good opportunity for our guys to get back into the routine of running in a larger pack.”

In its first meet of the season, Arkansas opened the year with a perfect team score at the Arkansas Invitational, a dual run with Missouri Southern at Agri Park in Fayetteville. Junior Eric Fernandez won the 6.6K race and was followed, in order, by Chuol Dey, Duncan Phillips, Cameron Efurd and Rick Elliott. All five runners in the Razorbacks’ top five finished within one second of each other.

At last year’s MSSU Stampede, Efurd led Arkansas’ team efforts and was the team’s top finisher with a 10th-place run.

Earlier this week, Phillips was voted the Razorbacks’ captain for the 2011 season by his teammates. Phillips, who returned to competition last season after a redshirt year in 2009, is one of three seniors for Arkansas this season.

In the Sept. 13 release of the USTFCCCA national rankings, Arkansas holds steady at the No. 15 spot it held in the preseason poll. The Razorbacks are the highest-ranked SEC team in the poll. Arkansas also remains the top-ranked team in the South Central region.

Following the MSSU Stampede, Arkansas will travel to Stillwater, Okla., for the Cowboy Jamboree (Oct. 1), hosted by top-ranked and defending national champion Oklahoma State.
