Three course records were broken today at the GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon in Victoria, BC.

Men’s and women’s marathon and the women’s half- marathon records were taken down on a day that presented little wind and perfect temperatures.

Thomas Omwenga of Kenya finished the fastest Victoria marathon in its 32-year history, completing the course in a time of 2:14:32, the previous record was held by Canadian Steve Osaduik, which was 2:16:49. The previous mark before that was held for 25 years by Canadian Tom Howard, which was exactly 2 minutes slower, 2:18:49.

The women’s mark was taken by fellow Kenyan Lucy Njeri, who is based in Toronto, Ontario. Her time was 2:37:56, eclipsing the 22-year old record set by Canadian Val Chowaniek, 2:42:36.

The women’s half-marathon previously held my Canadian Marilyn Arsenault of Victoria, BC was eclipsed by Vancouver’s (Port Moody) Natasha Wodak with her 1:15:27, twelve seconds faster than Arsenault’s.

The men’s race was one by John Ricardi of Bloomington, Indiana in 1:07:30.

Canadian Olympic team triathlete Kyle Jones breasted the tape of the 8km race in a time of 24:12. Jones is based in Victoria, BC. Canadian Olympian, Hilary Stellingwerff recently relocated back to Victoria from Switzerland. She entered the race and ended up winning in 28:01.

More on the marathon

Omwenga ran the first few miles with the 2010 winner, Philip Samoie before a series of surges over the first 15 kilometers put good separation between Omwenga and Samoie. Samoie ended up finishing over ten minutes behind for second place, third went to Canadian Ryan Day in 2:26:42.

Omwenga’s splits were: 10k - 31:32 and half-way - 67:32. Negative splits are rarely run on this course. Omwenga was two weeks fresh from winning the Montreal Marathon in the near identical time of 2:14:35.

Njeri’s half-way split was 1:18:12. She ended up winning by over twelve minutes as, Chelsea Vandebrake of Yakima, Washington finished in 2:49:51 for second place. Canadian Nadya Frye finished third in 2:55:43.
