LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
The University of Louisville track and field teams, coming off successful 2011 campaigns that saw one national champion, 12 All-America distinctions and two conference titles, open their
2012 seasons on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the one-day Indiana Open in Bloomington, Ind., hosted by Indiana University at the Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Field events begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the track events commence at 11:10 a.m. Live results for the meet can be found online at www.IUHoosiers.com.
“This is an opportunity for all of our athletes to compete to get the season started, and the facility is similar to what we will see at the BIG EAST Conference Championships
and the national championships,” head coach Ron Mann says, entering his eighth season at Louisville. “The indoor season will go very quickly and we will continue to build off this.”
Headlining the group of Cardinal women returnees is Khadija Abdullah, who captured the BIG EAST indoor shot put title and earned All-America honors in the event. Charachesicia
Lockhart is another returnee who won a BIG EAST individual title last season, as she took the long jump crown.
As a unit, the Louisville women won their first BIG EAST indoor title in program history with 110 points after a strong showing from the quartet of Ahlivia Spencer, Chelsea
Brown, Lockhart and Margret Harris – all returnees – in the 4x400m relay.
On the men’s side, the Cardinals return All-American long jumper Wesley Smith. Along with placing at nationals in the event, Smith won the BIG EAST indoor long jump title.
Prior to the national championships, his personal-best mark of 7.82m/25-8 ranked 12th nationally. Michael Edwards, another field event returnee, will be competing in the high jump. He placed second in the event at the BIG EAST Championships and had the 17th-best
mark (2.19m/7-2.25) prior to the NCAA Championships.
Collectively, the men placed fourth at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships last season, with Smith and former Cardinal Neil Angermeier winning event titles.
