LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
The University of Louisville track and field teams opened the indoor season with a strong start Saturday at the Indiana Open in Bloomington, Ind., as the Cardinals achieved 25 BIG EAST
qualifying marks.
Redshirt junior Michael Edwards arguably had the performance of the day for Louisville, clearing an indoor-best 2.20m/7-2.50 in the high jump. Not only does the mark rank
third nationally, it is just two inches off a national qualifying mark (2.24m/7-4.25) and the height ranks third best in school history.
“Michael Edwards’ mark should carry to national championships,” associate head coach Dale Cowper said. “He should improve throughout the season, but that's wonderful to
be one and done.”
Edwards achieved one of nine BIG EAST qualifying marks on the men’s side. Freshman Taylor Caldwell also qualified for the conference championships in the event by clearing
1.98m/6-6.
Also in the field events, sophomore Sam Bombaugh and redshirt freshman Brad Vivace each qualified in the weight throw and shot put, while true freshman Isaac Bowling advanced
in the shot put. After receiving a redshirt last year, Vivace compiled an admirable showing in the shot put with a throw of 16.71m/54-10. Bombaugh threw for a career-best 18.51m/60-8.75 in the weight throw to take second place in the event.
In his first collegiate debut, freshman Calvin Arsenault won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.44, while junior Marcellus Hobbs won the 300-meter run in 35.61.
On the women’s side, junior Margret Harris collected a pair of victories with strong season-opening performances in the long jump and 60m. Her mark of 6.00m/19-8.25 in the
long jump was an indoor best, with her 60m time (7.59) nearly two-tenths of a second better than the runner-up.
Junior Michelle Theophille achieved one of the women’s 15 BIG EAST qualifying marks and picked up a victory for the Cardinals in the high jump, clearing 1.77m/5-9.75, while
senior Megan Schubert placed second.
Also in the field events, the Cardinals had three qualify for the BIG EAST in the weight throw. Junior Amashi Kendall qualified by winning the weight throw with a heave
of 18.55m/60-10.5, while sophomore Patrice Gates was third with a toss of 17.25m/56.7.25, and Hannah Baker was fifth with a heave of 16.05m/52.8. Junior Khadija Abdullah had the top mark in the shot put with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 16.50m/54-1.75 and
currently ranks third nationally with that throw.
Senior Charachesicia Lockhart won the triple jump with a BIG EAST qualifying mark of 12.13m/39-9.75 and senior Malina Simmers was second with a league qualifying jump of
12.12m/39-9.25.
In the running events, the Cardinals had two athletes earn qualifying marks in the mile as sophomore Madie Davidson finished second with a time of 4:59.10, and classmate
Maria Frigo took fourth in 5:01.91.
The Cardinals return to action at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 13-14 in Lexington.
