Nierman Takes Big Ten Weekly Laurels

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana track and fieldÂ’s Robbie Nierman is the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Nierman is the national leader in the 3,000m after his win at the Indiana Open. Director and head coach Ron Helmer said he hopes that NiermanÂ’s success will help motivate others on the team that are ready to take a step forward.

“Robbie has run well to start the season,” said Helmer. “He still has a ways to go, but some of his hard work is starting to pay off. We will need him to continue to develop as we lose a lot of our top distance runners next year. Hopefully his success this week can open the door for some of our other guys on the cusp of a breakthrough.”

Nierman won the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:17.89, which leads the NCAA on the season. He destroyed his previous career best (8:48.86) by 31 seconds. He wins Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in his career, and he wins IUÂ’s second Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week honor of the season.

The Hoosiers return to action in a dual meet with Purdue next week on Jan. 14. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
