Kesselring Breaks Mile Mark
Brian Schaudt sets a PR to win the triple jump.

SEATTLE, WASH. – Anne Kesselring broke the school record in the mile and Brian Schaudt won the triple jump to highlight Oregon’s Saturday at the Husky Classic.

Kesselring, a junior from Nurnberg, Germany, was fourth in an exceptionally fast mile that produced the top four collegiate times in the nation this season. Sally Kipyego of Oregon Track Club Elite won the race in a Dempsey Indoor Facility record 4:28.41, followed by Washington’s Katie Flood – the new NCAA leader – in 4:28.48.

Hillary Stellingwerff of Speed River Tfc was third in 4:29.37 and Kesselring crossed in 4:32.61, giving her the second-fastest collegiate mile thus far in 2012. She broke teammate Jordan Hasay’s record of 4:33.01 by less than half a second.

For the men, Brian Schaudt saved his best jump for last, going 50-9.25/15.47m to win the triple jump. It was a leap that moved the senior from Philomath, Ore., to No. 4 on the all-time UO indoor list.

“Anne Kesselring ran exceedingly well,” said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “All of the men’s milers were good and we had some nice efforts in the triple jump as well.”

The invitational men’s mile saw a pair of PRs for the Ducks. Freshman Brian Shrader ran 4:03.14, while sophomore Boru Guyota timed 4:03.19.

In the regular slate of men’s mile freshman Daniel Winn won his section in 4:05.21. Senior Travis Stanford was right behind him in 4:05.22. Those were the seventh and eighth fastest times overall in the regular mile on Saturday.

In the women’s mile, sophomore Megan Patrignelli won the regular division in a personal-best 4:43.38.

Laura Roesler had the top collegiate finish in the women’s 800 meters. The sophomore from Fargo, N.D., was fourth overall in 2:05.07 behind winner Geena Gall of Oregon Track Club Elite (2:03.12) and two other professional runners.

Two members of Oregon’s 2012 Rose Bowl champion football team also made their debuts on Saturday. In the prelims of the 60 meters, sophomore Dior Mathis blazed to a personal-best 6.80 to win his heat, while freshman B.J. Kelley timed 6.83 and was second to professional Jeremy Dodson of Nike (6.77) as both Ducks advanced to the final. In the final, Mathis was third in 6.83 seconds, while Kelley took eighth overall in 6.90.

Sammie Clark won the lower section of the women’s pole vault. The freshman from North Bend, Ore., cleared an all-conditions personal-best 13-2.25/4.02m.

Former and current Ducks ruled the men’s 60 meter hurdles. Duck alum, and current volunteer assistant coach David Klech won in 8.00, with freshman Johnathan Cabral second in 8.01 and Eric Hersey, competing unattached, third in 8.15.

Freshman Claudia Francis made her Oregon debut in the 800 meters and finished second in her section in 2:09.16. Another freshman, Russell Hornsby, had an indoor personal best, 1:51.83, in a third-place finish in his section of the men’s 800.

Senior Rebecca Rhodes went an indoor best 19-5.5/5.93m to finish fourth in the long jump.
