NEW YORK –
Following a strong indoor regular season, the University of Louisville track and field teams head to New York City this weekend to participate in the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at
the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory from Feb. 18-19.
The two-day event begins Saturday with the pentathlon at 8 a.m. and resumes on Sunday at 9 a.m. with the men’s and women’s high jump events. Live results will be available
on www.ArmoryTrack.com, and free streaming video can be accessed through the BIG EAST’s championship central page.
Louisville women’s squad will be in search of its second-straight indoor title and sixth overall since joining the conference in the 2005-06 season. The combined total is
the most among any women’s since squad since the Cardinals joined the conference, with the closest competition being Notre Dame’s two combined women’s titles.
Heading into the meet, the Cardinal women have four student-athletes with the top BIG EAST marks: Amashi-ali Kendall (weight throw), Khadija Abdullah (shot put), Charachesicia
Lockhart (long jump) and Holly Knight (5,000m). Nationally, Kendall ranks seventh in the event, while Abdullah is listed as having the 14th-best mark.
Abdullah will be looking to repeat in her event after winning last year’s shot put title with a heave of 16.70m/54-9.50, one of her six victories in the event during the
indoor season. This year, she posted a win in the shot put at the Indiana Open.
Lockhart, after winning her first career title last year in the long jump, also will in search of her second-straight crown. The Dallas, Texas, native has one victory in
the event this year, but has been dominant in the triple jump, posting three wins in such competitions. Michelle Theophille (high jump) and Malina Simmers (triple jump) are also expected to give the Cardinals a surge in the field events.
On the track, Knight, a three-time All-American, is expected to lead the pack of distance runners. She set the school record in the 5,000m earlier this season. In the sprints
section, Margret Harris will be counted on to secure points in her respective events. She holds the third-fastest 60m mark in the BIG EAST and ranks No. 12 in the 200m.
The men’s side will be led by Michael Edwards, as he is listed No. 2 in the league in the high jump, checking in at No. 15 nationally. Fellow jumper Seon Powell will double
up, competing in the long and triple jump events. He ranks third in both events in the BIG EAST.
In the throws area, Louisville is expected to gain points from Brad Vivace and Sam Bombaugh in both the shot put and the weight throw. Vivace has the better mark out of
the two in the shot put (fifth in the BIG EAST), while Bombaugh has the edge in the weight throw (second in the league).
Luke Lovelace and Gordon Dooley will head the group of men’s track athletes, competing in the distance events. Lovelace, who ran a season-best 8:10.70 in the 3,000m at the
Meyo Invitational, ranks seventh in the event, and Dooley, competing in the 5,000m, has the 12th-fastest mark in the conference.
Freshman Calvin Arsenault and newcomer Emmanuel Matadi are making their first appearances at the BIG EAST Championships and vying for top-eight finishes in their respective
events. Arsenault clocked the eighth-fastest BIG EAST 60m hurdles time, while Matadi ranks 19th in the 60m.
