Louisville Track and Field Prepares for Action-Filled Weekend

The Cardinals will have athletes competing in three different meets this weekend.

April 5, 2012

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field teams are set for an action-filled weekend, with student-athletes competing at three different meets.

On Friday, April 6, Ariel Briggs will run in the 10,000m at the Bellarmine Invitational in Louisville. Holly Knight is scheduled to compete in the same event on Friday at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif. Both athletes are running the event for the first time in 2012. Knight earned All-America honors in the event while at Auburn in 2011.

A majority of the Cardinals are competing on Saturday, April 7, at the Tennessee Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn. Along with the Cardinals and event-host Tennessee, Akron, Carson-Newman and East Tennessee State round out the participating teams. Live results will be available at http://www.ptgrouponline.com/Live/2012/UT/Challenge/.

Sam Bombaugh and Brad Vivace open the meet for the Cardinals at 9 a.m. in the hammer throw. The women’s section starts upon the conclusion of the men’s event.

During those events, the men’s and women’s long jump and women’s javelin will be taking place.

The first track event of the day is the women’s 3,000m steeplechase at 12:30 p.m. The men’s race is set to start at 12:45 p.m., with Gordon Dooley and Mattias Wolter competing in the event. Wolter finished runner-up in the steeplechase at last year’s BIG EAST Championships, and he qualified for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Rounds in the event.

While the race is in progress, Bombaugh, Vivace and Isaac Bowling will take part in the men’s shot put. Khadija Abdullah, Amashi-ali Kendall and Chinwe Okoro are scheduled to participate in the women’s section later in the day.

Field athletes Maggie Gilbertson, Megan Schubert and Michelle Theophille continue action in the jumps area, taking part in the high jump at 1 p.m. Theophille is tied for 12th nationally in the event after clearing 1.78m/5-10 at the Bulls Invitational. Taylor Caldwell and Michael Edwards follow with the men’s high jump at 2:30 p.m.

Later in the day, eight Cardinals – four on each side – will run their respective sections of the 800m.

Madie Davidson is scheduled to run the Cardinals’ last individual event of the day, participating in the 3,000m race, before the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay races.
