Bickersteth, DeVita Win High Jump on Final Day of Liberty Invitational

Cavaliers also finish action at Colonial Relays

 

LYNCHBURG, Va.—The Virginia men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams completed action at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., and the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., Saturday (April 7).

 

In the women’s high jump, junior Pearl Bickersteth (Dumfries, Va.) won with a mark of 1.83m (6’ 0”), the third-best mark in program history. She became the third Cavalier female to clear six feet and achieved it on her first attempt at the height Saturday.

 

Sophomore Emily Kianka (Pennington, N.J.) and freshman Moira Cronin (Andover, Mass.) tied for second in the high jump with a height of 1.62m (5’ 3.75”).

 

In the women’s triple jump, junior Dallas Rose (Pearland, Texas) won with a mark of 12.77m (41’ 10.75”), the third-best mark in school history, while freshman Britni Strates (Orlando, Fla.) placed third with a distance of 12.11m (39’ 8.75”).

 

Sophomore Tommy DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.) reached a new PR in the men’s high jump, winning with a height of 2.05m (6’ 8.75”), tied for ninth-best in school history. Freshman Clark Thornhill (Richmond, Va.) finished third with a height of 1.89m (6’ 2.25”).

 

In the men’s pole vault, junior Matthew Armentrout (Glen Allen, Va.) tied a personal best and won with a mark of 4.65m (15’ 3”).

 

Sophomores Edy Ndem (Roanoake, Va.) and Anna Finger (Berlin, Germany) each reached a distance of 5.83m (19’ 1.5”), but Ndem won the competition with the second longest jump (5.80m to 5.63m).

 

In the women’s discus, senior Erin Wykoff (St. Jacob, Ill.) won with a mark of 51.64m (169’ 5”), while junior Emily Vannoy (Frederick, Md.) placed fourth with a throw of 43.92m (144’ 1”). Vannoy earned second in the women’s shot put with a distance of 13.72m (45’ 0.25”).

 

Freshman Ryan Satchell (Central Islip, N.Y.) earned second in the men’s triple jump with a leap of 14.73m (48’ 4”), the fifth-best UVa freshman mark and 10th-best overall mark in school history. His best jump came on his final attempt.

 

At the Colonial Relays, the womenÂ’s 4x400 relay team of senior Meagan Gillespie (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior Danielle Williams (Alexandria, Va.) and freshmen Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) and Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) won in a time of 3:43.10. The women, who only competed in running events, finished the two-day meet with 62 points in fifth place.

 

The womenÂ’s 4x100 relay team of freshman Jordan Stokes (Richmond, Va.), Williams, Gillespie and Lavender placed fourth in a time of 47.03.

 

In the womenÂ’s 4x800 relay, the squad of senior Tasia Potasinski (Centreville, Va.), junior Rosemary Barber (Springfield, Va.) and seniors Jayna McGehee (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jennifer Weatherly (Sterling, Va.) finished fifth in 9:07.67.

 

Sophomore Aaron Shepperd (Washington, D.C.) placed sixth in the menÂ’s 110-meter hurdles final in 14.44, while freshman Devin Brewer (Dumfries, Va.) placed 10th in 14.83.

 

In the final event of the Colonial Relays, the menÂ’s 4x400 relay of sophomore Ozzie Bryan (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior Lance Roller (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and freshmen Afolabi Shokunbi (Washington, D.C.) and Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.) placed eighth in a time of 3:16.61. The men, who also only competed in running events, finished with 38 points in seventh place.

 

MichiganÂ’s men and VillanovaÂ’s women took home the team titles at the Colonial Relays.

 

The Cavaliers return to action next Saturday (April 14) for the George Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va., before hosting the ACC Championships at newly renovated Lannigan Field April 19-21.
