UTEP Invitational next for No. 6 Razorbacks

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 6 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team will compete at the UTEP Invitational this weekend at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas. Competition in the field events is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. (CT) with running events slated for a 3 p.m. start.

The Razorbacks are one of three ranked teams set to compete Saturday along with No. 10 Kansas and No. 17 Kansas State. The rest of the field includes host UTEP, Boise State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Rice, Abilene Christian, Central Arizona, Grand Canyon and Juarez.

Entering the third weekend of the outdoor campaign, Arkansas has four top-10 event rankings on the national performance list. Tina Sutej has the No. 1 clearance in the pole vault with her 4.55m/14-11 effort at Texas Relays. At 5,000 meters, Kristen Gillepie is ranked third in the nation with a time of 15:48.91. Grace Heymsfield in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the Razorbacks’ 4x400-meter relay are both ranked No. 10 in the NCAA.

Having competed almost exclusively in relay events at Texas Relays, the Razorback sprinters, including NCAA indoor 400 meter runner-up Regina George, will make their individual debuts at UTEP. Sutej and 4x400-meter relays are also scheduled to compete.

The top six remain unchanged in the April 10 release of the USTFCCCA national poll with Arkansas holding steady at No. 6 in the nation. The Razorbacks are one of three SEC teams in the top 10 and one of six in the top 25 overall. Arkansas continues to be joined in the rankings by LSU, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn.

The UTEP Invitational is the Razorbacks’ fourth event of the outdoor season. Next weekend, Arkansas will split its squad between the John McDonnell Invitational (April 20-21) in Fayetteville and the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Coverage of the UTEP Invitational will include live results and a video stream available through the Miners’ web site. For more information regarding Razorback track and field or University of Arkansas athletics, please visit ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
