Duerksen is Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IndianaÂ’s Kelsey Duerksen is the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week the conference announced. The junior from Ann Arbor, Mich., wins her first career Big Ten weekly honor after running a conference-leading time in the 1,500 meters at the Border Battle in Louisville on Saturday.

Indiana Track and Field Director and Head Coach Ron Helmer said Duerksen has shown progress all year and SaturdayÂ’s performance was just a taste of what Duerksen can do.

“We had a lot of student-athletes step up in Louisville,” said Helmer. “Kelsey did a good job of just going out and trusting her training and allowing good things to happen. She has had a good year so far, and we need to keep her progressing, as there is still a lot there.”

Duerksen won the 1,500m in a time of 4:19.81, which ranks fourth in IU history, surpassing IU legend Molly Beckwith on the all-time list. Duerksen's time leads the Big Ten this season and ranks 13th nationally.

This weekend the Hoosiers host the first meet of the season at Billy Hayes Track. The Polytan Invitational will take place on April 21-22. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
