Razorbacks win six events in home finale

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 10 University of Arkansas women’s track and field team closed out its home slate with six wins and 18 personal- and season-best performances Friday during the Arkansas Twilight at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville. The Razorbacks collected wins from Regina George at 200 meters, Whitney Jones at 400 meters, Dominique Scott at 3,000 meters, Ivanique Kemp in the 100-meter hurdles, Tina Sutej in the pole vault and the 4x100-meter relay team.

“As far as a tune-up event for the SEC meet, today couldn’t have been better,” head coach Lance Harter said. “It went perfectly because we gain that little bit of inspiration and confidence. We hit on some of the things we needed to work on so the meet went off flawlessly.”

In the first result on the track, the 4x100 team of George, Jones, Gwendolyn Flowers and Tiffany Hines combined for a season-best time of 44.01, the third-fastest time in school history. Earlier this season, the same group ran a time of 44.09 to crack the program’s top-five list. Both performances were run John McDonnell Field.

George and Jones had individual victories of their own Friday. At 200 meters, George outpaced the field with a personal-best time of 23.20. The Razorbacks swept the top-three spots in the 200 meters with Hines and Flowers following, respectively. Behind a slight tailwind, it was the fifth-fastest wind-aided time in program history. Jones won the 400 meters with a season-best effort of 52.70, her first dip below 53 seconds of the season.

Having qualified with the fastest time in the preliminary round, Kemp returned to the track to win the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. She crossed the finish line in a time of 13.20, matching her season best and national record for her native Bahamas. Kemp and teammate Brittany Hyter (13.37) finished 1-2 in finals of the hurdle event.

Sutej continued her run through the pole vault in 2012 with her 10th consecutive victory. She capped her home finale with a final clearance of 4.45m/14-7.25. Sutej bested a field that included former Razorback All-American Katie (Stripling) Tannehill and 2008 Olympian April Steiner-Bennett.

Running down in distance from her typical race, Scott won the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:18.53. She paced a 1-2 finish for the Razorbacks with teammate Rachel Carpino coming in second place with a personal-best time of 10:19.07.

Up next, the Razorbacks’ championship season begins May 10-13 with the SEC Championships in Baton Rouge, La. Arkansas’ regional qualifiers will then compete May 24-26 at the NCAA West Preliminary in Austin, Texas. The 2012 collegiate season comes to a close June 6-9 with the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
