May 10, 2012
LOUISVILLE, Ky. –
With the NCAA Preliminary Rounds just two weeks away, the University of Louisville track and field teams will play host to their annual Cardinal Twilight meet on Friday, May 11, at Cardinal
Park Track and Soccer Stadium, with the event serving as a last-chance meet for athletes to achieve national qualifying standards.
Competition at the throws field begins at 10 a.m., while field events inside the stadium are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. Running events, which are on a rolling schedule,
commence at 5 p.m. Live results from the meet can be accessed through www.UofLsports.com.
The last time out, the Cardinals participated in the BIG EAST Championships, and the women came away with their fifth-straight outdoor conference title. It is the first
time a BIG EAST men’s or women’s team has been able to achieve the feat at the outdoor championships.
Following the event, multiple athletes improved their marks from a regional and national standpoint, including Michelle Theophille, whose school-record tying mark in the
high jump (1.86m/6-1.25), ranks second in the region and third nationally. Chinwe Okoro moved up in the shot put, throwing a regional best and school record 17.39m/57-0.75.
On the women’s side, Maggie Gilbertson, Charachesicia Lockhart and Malina Simmers are each set to compete in their respective jumps events. Gilbertson, competing in the
high jump, ranks 39th in the region. Lockhart, who is participating in the long and triple jump events, is in the top 10 in the long jump, but checks in at No. 31 in the triple jump, ahead of Simmers (No. 55).
In the throws, Amashi Kendall, participating in the shot put, discus and hammer throw events, is listed outside the top 15 regionally only in the discus and will be looking
to earn a qualifying mark in the event. Khadija Abdullah, Patrice Gates and Hannah Baker round out the women’s throwers who are scheduled to compete.
Leading the men’s side on the track will be Calvin Arsenault (110m hurdles), Emmanuel Matadi (100m) and Jordon Frazier (400m hurdles). All three rank in the top 50 in the
region in their respective events, with Arsenault owning the top ranking of the three, as he holds 33rd-fastest time in the high hurdles.
Sam Bombaugh and Brad Vivace will be two of the three men’s throwers competing. Bombaugh is scheduled to take part in the hammer throw, where he ranks 23rd regionally, while
Vivace is set to throw the shot put.
