Mayhew Takes Big Ten 10K Title in Record Time

MADISON, Wis. - Indiana track and field got a great start on day one at the Big Ten Championships, getting a Big Ten title in the menÂ’s 10,000m out of Zach Mayhew. MayhewÂ’s win is the first in school history in the 10K, and he broke the McClimon Complex record in the process. The Hoosier men ended the day in fifth place with MayhewÂ’s 10 points.
 
Mayhew dropped WisconsinÂ’s Elliot Krause with 300m to go, pulling away steadily to the victory. His time of 28:55.06 is nearly 30 seconds better than the previous facility record and was more than four seconds ahead of Krause in second place. His time is the fourth fastest in IU history, shedding nearly 25 seconds off his previous career mark. The first Big Ten Champion in IU history in the 10,000m, Mayhew becomes the fifth member of IUÂ’s distance corps with a Big Ten crown, joining Andy Bayer, Ben Hubers, Andrew Poore and DeÂ’Sean Turner.
 
Courtney Woodard put herself in a great spot after the first day in the heptathlon. She is in seventh place with 3,235 points and is just 95 points out of fourth. Ann-Marie Clarke is also ina good spot in 11th place. Clarke is within 169 points of eighth place and the final scoring point. Woodard tallied career bests of 14.18 seconds in the 100m hurdles, 12.48m (40-11.5) and 25.11 seconds in the 200. Clarke also had three career bests out of the four events, jumping 1.52m (4-11.75) in the high jump, throwing 10.36m (34-0) in the shot put and running 24.51 seconds in the 200.
 
In the menÂ’s and womenÂ’s hammer throw, Hoosiers came up just short on attempts to make the finals. Dan Galos was 10th, missing out on the nine-thrower final with a heave of 59.27m (194-5). Monique Riddick had a similar fate in the womenÂ’s hammer launching a 1.5 meter PR of 55.55m (182-3), finishing 10th and also just missing the finals.
