Indiana Track and Field Ranked Third Nationally

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IndianaÂ’s menÂ’s track and field team is ranked third nationally in the rankings released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The ranking is the highest in school history. With preliminary action for the NCAA Championships set to begin on May 24 in Jacksonville, Fla., the Hoosiers will look to earn the first top-10 finish at the outdoor national meet since 1993 and the first top-five finish since 1941. The Hoosiers are currently in the lead for the John McDonnell National Program of the Year Award, which recognizes the team with the lowest combined national finishes during the cross country, indoor and outdoor seasons.

Indiana Track and Field Director and Head Coach Ron Helmer said that despite a disappointing finish at the Big Ten Championships, his team still has lofty goals for the rest of the outdoor season.

“We were disappointed with a third place finish at the Big Ten meet,” said Helmer, “but this bump in the national rankings is evidence of the outstanding performances our student-athletes put on the board at the meet. We hope that we are able to continue that success and parlay it into a high placing at the NCAA Championships a month from now.”

Indiana has 13 marks on the season that rank among the nationÂ’s top 15. Leading the way is Derek Drouin, who won the Big Ten high jump title with a clearance of seven feet and seven inches, which ranks second this season in Division I, and teammate Darius King ranks 13th nationally in the event as well. Andrew Poore has the third fastest time this year in the 3,000m steeplechase, and he is joined by three teammates in the top 10 on the national list in the steeple, as DeÂ’Sean Turner, Adrien Dannemiller and Andy Weatherford rank fourth, eighth and 10th respectively.

Andy Bayer has the nationÂ’s sixth fastest time in the 5,000 meters and the 15th best 1,500-meter time this season. Kind Butler and Chris Vaughn rank seventh nationally in the 200m and 400m races respectively, and the two sprinters have led IU to the 13th best times in both the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays. Zach Mayhew ranks 15th nationally this season in the 10,000 meters, with his Big Ten winning time from this past weekend.
