Final Men’s Watch List Adds Cabral, Morton; McCullough, Riley Return

Des Moines will be final site of NCAA Championships next weekend

May 30, 2012

NEW ORLEANS – A week from today, the final stages of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will commence in Des Moines, Iowa. The four-day finale of the national championships will have a large impact on deciding who will be named this year’s winner of The Bowerman – collegiate track & field’s top honor. In the final watch list of the year, four names replaced four others on the list of ten, including newcomers Princeton’s Donn Cabral and Stanford’s Amaechi Morton. Returning to the watch list in this update are Princeton’s Conor McCullough and Illinois’ Andrew Riley.

Cabral clocked 8:19.14 in the steeplechase at the USATF Oxy High Performance meet on May 18. It marked the fastest time by a collegian since Henry Rono’s string of five races under 8:19 in 1978 and 1979. Cabral is now No. 2 on the all-time collegiate performers list.

Morton is the collegiate-leader in the 400 hurdles with a 48.95 clocking which was notched in winning the Pac-12 title.

New to this update in the “also receiving mention” category are Oregon’s Mike Berry and Florida’s Omar Craddock. The duo received votes for the watch list, but did not accumulate enough votes from the committee to be listed in the watch list of ten. Last weekend, Berry clocked a collegiate-leading 44.86 in the quarter-final, 400-meter round of the NCAA Championships at the West prelims in Austin. Craddock still owns the comprehensive collegiate-leader in the triple jump from the indoor season where he marked 54-11½ (16.75m) to win the NCAA indoor title.

Ten men’s semifinalists for The Bowerman will be announced on Monday, June 18 and three finalists will be announced on Friday, June 29. The winner of The Bowerman will be presented on December 19 in conjunction with the USTFCCCA Convention in Orlando, Fla. The three finalists will be invited to take part in the award ceremony.

ABOUT THE BOWERMAN

The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation.

Florida State’s Ngoni Makusha and Texas A&M’s Jessica Beard are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field and cross country coach Bill Bowerman.

Bowerman served the sport of track and field in numerous ways. His leadership in the USTFCCCA’s predecessor organization, the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and his contributions to NCAA track and field and the running community as a whole are among his many lasting legacies.

For more information on The Bowerman, the award, the trophy, and Bill Bowerman himself, visit TheBowerman.org.
