DES MOINES, Iowa. - Derek Drouin took second in the menÂ’s high jump to score IndianaÂ’s first points in the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Indiana also got four runners through to Saturday finals on the day, with Andy Bayer advancing in the 1,500m and Andrew Poore, Adrien Dannemiller and DeÂ’Sean Turner getting through in the 3,000m steeplechase. After six events in the meet the Hoosiers are tied for 11th place with eight points.
 
Drouin cleared 2.31m (7-7) and was the only jumper to do so without a miss in the competition. When the bar moved to 2.34m (7-8), defending champion Erik Kynard cleared the bar on his first attempt. A Drouin miss put the Kansas State jumper into the lead. Drouin passed on his second and third attempt to try to get the lead back on his side. The bar moved to 2.37m (7-9.25), where Drouin had two very close misses. Drouin now has five top-two finishes at NCAA meets in his career. He was the national runner-up indoors in 2009 and won three-straight NCAA titles in 2010 and 2011.
 
Bayer clocked a time of 3:39.95 for second in his heat and the second-fastest qualifying time from the two heats. BayerÂ’s time ranks eighth in IU history, and is his top time in an IU uniform. Bayer will run in the 1,500m final at 12:17 p.m. ET on Saturday, live on ESPNU.
 
Poore took fifth in the first heat to automatically advance to the finals in 8:42.17. In the second heat, Dannemiller ran 8:42.17 for seventh and Turner ran 8:44.99 for ninth in the heat and the final spot in the Saturday final. IU will have three runners in the national final in the steeplechase for the second-straight year. The final is at 12:52 p.m. ET on Saturday, live on ESPNU.
 
Kind Butler narrowly missed out on advancing in the 200 meters, running 20.57, which was the fastest non-advancing time, for fifth in the third and final heat. His time was faster than three runners who automatically qualified in other heats and would have won the second heat.
 
In the 4x400m relay, the Hoosiers took 18th in preliminary action, clocking a time of 3:06.98. IU got a split of 44.58 on the anchor from Kind Butler.
