Bayer Takes NCAA 1,500-meter Title

DES MOINES, Iowa. - Andy Bayer won his first NCAA title on the final day of the NCAA Championships, becoming IndianaÂ’s first outdoor national champion in a running event since 1993 and the 45th NCAA Champion in the history of IU Track and Field. DeÂ’Sean Turner took seventh in the 3,000m Steeplechase, moving IndianaÂ’s men to 11th place with 20 points. The finish is the best outdoors for the Indiana men since 1993.

Bayer out-dove BYUÂ’s Miles Batty at the line to win the 1,500m NCAA title in a time of 3:43.82, capping his first ever trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Bayer beat Batty by .01, earning IUÂ’s fourth NCAA crown in the 1,500, joining IU legends Bob Kennedy, Jim Spivey and Don Lash. BayerÂ’s 10 points moves his career total to 44 points at NCAA meets, which ranks fifth in IU history, surpassing Bob KennedyÂ’s 41. He is IndianaÂ’s 45th track and field NCAA Champion and 141st NCAA Champion regardless of sport.

“IÂ’m super excited,” said Bayer. “This is what IÂ’m going for at every NCAA meet.  I was set up well with 200 meters to go and I thought ‘IÂ’m not going to let this go, IÂ’m going to fight to the end,Â’ and it worked out.”

Turner clocked a time of 8:46.04 for seventh, finishing just .03 out of sixth. Turner is IndianaÂ’s first three-time All-American in the 3,000m steeplechase. He closes his career with six All-America certificates to his credit, all first team.

Turner was followed in by Adrien Dannemiller in ninth, claiming second team All-America honors in 8:47.86, and Andrew Poore gutted out the finish of the steeple for 14th in 9:25.95 for second-team honors of his own.

The only thing left for Indiana track and field are national championship meets. The USA Track and Field Junior Championships come first, as Bloomington plays host to the meet next weekend. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
