Nick Symmonds Lives Up to the Hype - Day 4 Performance of the Night

All eyes were on Eugene resident Nick Symmonds on Monday night. Talk of temporary tattoos, Facebook groups and Paris Hilton were out the window. Only one thing mattered - what Symmonds did on the track, and, oh, did he step up to the plate.

Symmonds moved up from the back of the pack in his characteristic fashion, swung wide on the last turn and kicked it home to claim his fifth consecutive U.S. title.

Symmonds's time of 1:43.92 was the first time he broke 1:44 on Hayward Field and the fastest he has run before the month of July.

"I just want to have fun with the sport," Symmonds said about dealing with the expectations of being a favorite. "At [age] 28 I now know the balance I need in my life."

Symmonds appears to be as confident as ever, crediting his speed development to his progression as a half-miler.

"It's been a constant evolution from a distance kid who ran cross country in college to a true 800 meter runner," Symmonds said. "In college I couldn't break 49 [seconds] to save my life. Now I think I can go out and run 45 or 46 seconds [for 400 meters]."

He'll next be looking to race at the Monaco Diamond League where he has run three of his four fastest times ever.

For stepping under the pressure, Nick Symmonds gets the nod for Flotrack's day four performer of the night.
