Allyson Felix Obliterates Competition - Day 7 Performance of the Night
Allyson Felix dismissed any discussion of tiebreakers on Saturday with a dominant win in the 200 meter final. Felix ran an Olympic Trials record and personal best 21.69 seconds, making her the sixth-fastest performer of all-time.
"I don't think it has quite sunk in yet," Felix said in the post-race press conference. "For so long I've looked at those times and been inching along hoping to be up there on the list."
Felix just trails Florence Griffith-Joyner and Marion Jones on the all-time U.S. list.
Running out of lane eight, 100 meter champ Carmelita Jeter was second in 22.11 seconds while Sanya Richards-Ross, the 400 meters Trials winner, was third in 22.22 seconds.
Jeneba Tarmoh, the other part of the 100 meter runoff controversy, was fifth.
The key behind the breakthrough for Felix was a better start and improving turn running.
"I felt like I ran a great curve, something that I've been working on," Felix said. "There are so many strong people in the race that I could never relax or be content with where you are."
Although she was pleased with her performance, the Olympic Trials are not the end road for Felix.
"The job is not done," Felix said. "It's all about London and getting it done there."
Saturday's performance was clearly a statement race for Felix. Despite her third place in the 100 meters, Felix showed that she remains a central figure in the 200 meters. She will again face her nemesis Veronica Campbell-Brown in London where Felix will be looking for differing results from the two previous Olympics.
